Buy It NOW (or I will)! – Art Nerd Seattle Edition

Last updated · Seattle

Jessica Dolence is obsessed with the mythology of the ocean, and her two pieces at SOIL’s Surf and Turf are sexy, playful, Candy Land-versions of sea-meets-land. In her world, fish eggs nest cozily in foamy iridescent nests of pearls. Siren songs accompany the dance of mushrooms, roses, pearls, caviar, and coral.

Caviar Nursery ($850) is a digital inkjet print embroidered with sequins — the kind of piece that catches you during an art walk and doesn’t let go. The combination of digital printing and hand-applied sequins gives the work a material richness that reproductions can’t convey.

If video art is more your speed, Wet Land ($400, edition of 5) delivers. Goldfish swim through an undulating digital sea filled with ombré rainbow lily pads that look faintly like floating Pac-Man heads. The sea peels back to meet a field of grass, which in turn gets eaten by a hungry lawnmower. The sound design — harps and waves — lulls without being precious. Inkjet video still prints are available upon request.
