The Apple by Stephen Weiss
Stephen Weiss created his “Larger than Life” collection shortly before his death from lung cancer in 2001. The series includes four pieces — a high-heeled shoe, a roll of film, a Dressage horse, and this big apple, a tribute to New York City. The Dressage Horse was the final piece, completed posthumously by Weiss’s son and presented at the Hampton Classic.
The Apple, here in Millenium Garden along the Hudson River Park, is a 3-ton, 9-foot bronze resting on a bench of apple cores. It symbolizes the heart and “core” of the city — which, given that Weiss spent his life working alongside Donna Karan’s fashion empire while quietly making art, feels appropriately understated.
Weiss never sought public recognition for his sculpture. The work speaks for itself.
