Sky's the Limit at O'Hare Airport

Last updated · Chicago

Running from one terminal to the next at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport is a famously grueling experience — the McCallister family’s sprint in Home Alone was filmed there for a reason.

The long trek between concourses B and C in Terminal 1, however, gets a genuine upgrade thanks to a stunning light installation by Michael Hayden. Installed in 1987, Sky’s the Limit consists of 466 neon tubes affixed to the ceiling of the passenger tunnel. The lights start white at each end and cycle through a full spectrum of color along the length of the moving walkway. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue plays softly in the background — easily missed in the airport chaos, but unmistakably there.

As a bonus footnote: Sky’s the Limit appeared in the music video for Puff Daddy’s 1997 hit I’ll Be Missing You.

Location: O’Hare International Airport, Terminal 1, Concourse B–C tunnel
